
CAUSE-Giardia is a parasite that can be found in different and unexpected water sources, such as puddles, ponds, swimming pools, streams and rivers. Your pet can contract the disease by drinking contaminated water or by licking paws after exposure to infected areas.
RISK-Mainly
puppies, outdoor dogs, dogs that go to the kennel are some of the dogs
that would be at risk.
Areas of potential exposure
would include dog shows, boarding kennels, and communal dog walking areas.
There is also a risk
of potential exposure of pets to humans. This can be a zoonotic disease.
Humans can catch this disease.
SYMPTOMS-The symptoms includes diarrhea, weight loss and possible abdominal cramping and pain.
TREATMENT-There is a specific treatment available which includes the administration of antibiotics.
PREVENTION-The prevention of the disease involves a series of 2 vaccinations 3 weeks apart and then yearly boosters. The vaccine can be given to puppies 8 weeks and older.
